The OLEM Youth Group
7UP is the Youth Group for the parish of Our Lady and the English Martyrs, Cambridge. All parishioners who are in secondary school are very welcome to come along and meet other young Catholics. The aim of the group is for teenagers to support each other in their faith and to have fun together.
As well as retreat weekends away, the group organise low-key meetings doing things like making pizza and having a chat, or BBQs at someone's home. Occasionally there are day trips perhaps bowling, karting or to a theme park.
Parents are very welcome to become involved and help share their faith with our young people.
Events for 2014 - 2015
We are still planning the events for the rest of the year, please watch this space. There will be monthly events through 2014-15. We are likely to join the Diocesan Epiphany Mass and Fireworks in early January, and the Good Friday Hot Cross Bun event and Taize Service is a regular fixture. Please let us know if you have any really good ideas for events, particularly if you would like to help to organise one for us.
27th Sept - The ever-popular Games Night returns! We meet at 7.30pm in the Parish Centre, to eat pizza and play lots of different games. If you'd like to come, please reply either to this email or on the Facebook (closed) Group event page if you have Facebook. Please request to join group if you want to and I can add you.
1st November 2014 - All Saints' Day party. 7-9.30pm in the Parish Centre. we are suggesting (optional) dressing up as the real Superheroes - your favourite Saints. Or perhaps bring an item that reminds you of a saint you like? But please come anyway if you're not keen on the dressing up. We could also have a competition of the most imaginative Saint-based carved pumpkin (bring your ready carved pumpkins, and we can say a short prayer by the light of the candles). We will play traditional Hallowe'en type games such as apple bobbing and doughnut-on-string-eating (without hands). We can also play more of the games we didn't get around to at the recent games night! Please could you let me know by the day before so I can get enough food? I thought chilli on potatoes this time, as well as all the doughnuts. Please let me know any special dietary requirements. Also please can anyone who hasn't done a registration form please print one out (see below) and bring it with them on the night? I've changed the wording slightly to make the gift aid easier to do.
22nd November 2014 - A trip out to Comberton to "Live and Amped" - a concert and talent show featuring Guvna B, urban contemporary gospel rap artist, amongst others. Please see the website and their Facebook wall. Tickets are £5 if we get them in advance or £7 on the door. You'll also need to bring money for the tuck shop. I'll try and find out if this will be a proper meal or if we have to eat in advance.
13th December 2014 - Parish Centre 7-10pm. Fr Henry has kindly agreed to help us make a Jesse Tree. The main activity will then start...making the 7-up 7 cup Christmas Puddings which were so popular last year. We will end with night prayer then hot chocolate. VERY IMPORTANT Please bring a small pudding basin!!!! Everyone forgot last year so Mark had to rush to the shops to buy loads. We will take our puddings home at the end of the evening, to cook later on. There will be supper; please let me know any dietary requirements. Would any parents be able to help me with this event please? Perhaps some help with the shopping and catering, and 2 people to stay and help out (or more if you like). RSVP by 11th December please
4th January 2015 - Diocesan Youth Candlelight Epiphany Mass - at Poringland with Bishop Alan. We will take a group up to this Mass which has been a lovely occasion in the past, ending with fireworks and supper.
7th February 2015 - Film Night - OLEM parish Hall starting at 7pm. We will watch the film 'Noah' (2014) (12) and eat supper. We will end with a short evening prayer in the hall at just before 10pm.
7th March 2015 - Sleepover in the Parish Hall - Starting at 7pm and finishing 8th March after the 10:45 Mass. We will have a shared supper and then, in honour of science week, a bridge building competition. We will provide the materials. The winning bridge will support the greatest weight. In the morning we will have waffles and bacon and then tidy up before going to the 10:45 Mass. Please bring overnight things and a sleeping bag and sleep mat. You can bring some snacks for after supper and perhaps a board game or card game. We will comply with child protection regulations by ensuring girls and boys sleep in separate rooms, with adults in another room between them. Please RSVP by Friday 6th March if you can come, so we know numbers for catering. Let me know if you have any special dietary requirements. If you haven't already, please fill in a registration form from the website. Would anyone like to help with cooking and shopping?
3rd April 2015 - Good Friday Hot Cross Buns - We will meet after the Good Friday Veneration of the Cross service, which begins at 3pm and is usually about 1.5 hours long. If you aren't going to the service and arrive at 4.30pm and if we aren't there yet, please feel free to join us in the Church or wait outside the Parish Centre. We will be making Hot Cross Buns and will have a light supper of potatoes, baked beans and cheese, and eating the hot cross buns. This is usually a very popular event and the buns always turn out just perfect! We will eat at around 7pm.
Mary Boyle, a founding member of the group who we totally forgive for moving to Oxford, has recently been to Palestine and visited our twin parish in Birzeit. She will be at the session and will tell us about her experience. This will be informal and there will be lots of time to chat about this and other things. At 8.30pm there will be the Parish Taize prayer service which is run jointly by 7-up and the 5 Alive choir. I have met with Joe Capriani to discuss the music and there will be a few musicians from 5 Alive. If you would like to join in with this please bring along an instrument, any standard is fine, we can sort out something you can play. Singers are also very welcome. We will have a rehearsal for the music at 7.30pm in the music room. I would be grateful for replies by Thursday please, so we can cater appropriately. But obviously please still come if you have forgotten to reply..
2nd - 4th May 2015 - Ignite Festival in Swaffham - Youth Arts Event plus walk to Walsingham.
Sunday 14th June 2015 - Diocesan Youth Team Mass: The 6pm Mass at St. Laurence's, Cambridge on 14th June will be a special regional Mass for young people celebrated by Bishop Alan. There will be refreshments afterwards and a question and answer session where young people can ask Bishop Alan anything! Do come. It would be great to have a good 7-up posse for this Mass. Please feel free to just turn up if you can make it, but I guess it would be good if you replied ASAP once you know you can come, so I can let the team know how much food to provide.
12th July 2015 - End of year Barbecue - The Ward family have generously agreed to host our annual barbecue and (optional) waterfight on Sunday 12th July, from 5pm. Their address is 4 Bosserts Way, Highfields Caldecote. Please bring a salad or side dish or dessert to share, we will provide the meat. All the family are invited to make this a family event, especially any year 6s who may be interested in joining 7-up next year. Please come with ideas for what you would like to do next year. Replies by email or on the Facebook wall would be appreciated so that we can buy enough meat! Here is a poster if you have somewhere to advertise it.
Please could you download the form again to fill in (we need up to date information from everyone). The annual donation of £15-20 would be very welcome if you are able to pay it, the easiest for me is to do a BACS transfer using the bank details on the registration form. Then please email me and OLEM office (addresses on the form) to say you've done it, so we know how much money we have in the account to fund our events.
